Kathu Solar Park 2026 Bursary Scheme



Kathu Solar Park is a 100MW concentrated solar power (CSP) project located in the vicinity of Kathu in South Africa’s Northern Cape province. Covering over 800ha, it includes molten salt energy storage with a wholesome power generation that sustains 4.5h at full load.

The project is being developed by Engie Energy International, together with the Public Investment Corporation, SIOC Community Development Trust, alongside the Lereko Metier and Investec as follows: Development Bank of Southern Africa and Kathu Trust. It was built by the EPC consortia Acciona and SENER.

Kathu Solar Park has been delivering clean energy for approximately 179 000 South African homes since commencing commercial operation in January 2019.


Fields Covered

Kathu Solar Park Bursary Programme 2026 for young South Africans from John Taolo Gaetsewe in South Africa. The Kathu Solar Park Bursary is available to students who live within the community of JT Gaetseewe. The community consists of Kuruman, Bethlehem, Mothibistad, De Ghosland at Mamatwan as well as Hotazel municipality in the Northern Cape to apply.

Bursaries will be given to study courses in any, enabling them to follow their chosen careers.

Since 2022, The kathu programme has given the JT Gautseewe community learners access to higher education. The bursary has so far helped over 40 students and increases steadily each year.


what the bursary Covers

Successfully funded students will receive the following coverage:

  1. Tuition and registration fees
  2. Examination fees
  3. Books, stationery (prescribed books) etc.
  4. Accommodation and meals
  5. Selection is based on:
    • Outstanding academic performance (Grade12 results/ latest transcript)
    • Financial need (annual household income is not more than R600 000)

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the bursary, the learner/student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a South African citizen currently registered full-time at a public or Seta accredited private tertiary education institution (university, university of technology), TVET college
  2. Living in Kathu or the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality
  3. Must be in Matric or already have Matric
  4. Either plan to or currently study in a full-time capacity in any field
  5. Be enrolled or accepted at a public or accredited private South African university
  6. Have a strong academic record
  7. Show proof of need for financial assistance [total annual household income of ≤ R600 000]

If you are a high-achieving student with demonstrated financial need apply before as early as possible to increase your chances to get funding.


Required Documents

Make sure to submit a clear copy of the following certified documents along with your application:

  1. ID document
  2. Matric mid-year results (if you are a matric applicant)
  3. Matric certificate (if completed Matric)
  4. Most recent official copy of your academic record (the document must be on institution letterhead)
  5. Evidence of an application or enrolment in a university 
  6. Proof of residential address
  7. Parents/guardians income evidence (latest pay slips, affidavit, proof of pension/grant if invalid coerced visitor)

Make sure to submit all requested document, any missing document may result in your application not reviewed.
