LGSETA BURSARY SCHEME 2026



The Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) assist in improving abilities for people working in local government and unemployed citizens who would like to work in this field. LGSETA function under the Department of Higher Education and Training and is one of the 21 SETA in South Africa.


Field of study

LGSETA is providing 230 bursaries for 2026 academic year, and these bursaries will be awarded to full-time students in the sectors that support local government work. Some of the main field of study include the following:

1. Civil Engineering

- N4, N5, N6 in Civil Engineering

2. Electrical Engineering

- Bachelor \ Honours \ Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering

- N4, N5, N6 in Electrical Engineering

3. Engineering Management

- Master of Engineering in Engineering Management 

4. Other Engineering Fields

(Bachelor \ Diploma)

- Civil Engineering (environment, Construction Management, Water, Transport, Urban Engineering)

- Civil Engineering Technologist (same specialisations)

5. Environmental and Health Studies

Honours \ Advances Diploma \ Bachelor in:

- Environmental Management

- Disaster Risk Reduction

Important information about the bursary

- Bursaries are awarded based on available funding and whether applicant meet all requirements.

- The bursary only covers one academic year at a times. Students must reapply every year.

- Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted within 3 months after the closing date. If you don't hear back, your application was unsuccessful.


Who can apply? (Eligibility)

1. Be a South African citizen or permanent resident

2. Unemployed citizens

3. Be in Matric or have already passed Matric

4. Plan to study full-time in an approved qualification

5. Study at a registered University, University of Technology, or TVET College

6. Be accepted or provisionally accepted at an accredited South African Institution

7. Apply for a qualification that appears on the LGSETA bursary list

All copies must be certified (not older than 6 months):

1. South African ID

2. Matric latest results (if still in matric)

3. Matric certificate (if already completed matric)

4. Latest academic results (if already studying)

5. Previous years tertiary results (if a returning student)

6. Acceptance letter from your institution

7. Proof you are unemployed (affidavit)

8. Proof of registration (if already registered)

9. Parents\guardians' proof of income or SASSA letter\pension slip
