In South Africa, Shell's activities include fuels and lubricants, chemicals, manufacturing and upstream exploration. The company also ownns and manages a chain of services stations throughout the country where it sells fuel and energy-related products to consumers as well as industries.
The commercial fuels & lubricants division provides products like diesel fuel, paraffin, lubricants, bitumen and heavy fuel to various markets like mining, agriculture, construction and transport. Shell is also a joint owner of the SAPREF refinery together with BP. The SAPREF refinery is one of the largest oil refineries on the African continent.
Fields of study covered
Shell is inviting students to apply for its bursary programme for the 2026 academic year.
Bursaries will be awarded for STEM-related qualifications (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) that are relevant to the energy industry, at recognised public universities in South Africa.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must have completed Matric
- Must have achieved a minimum overall average of 75% in Matric
- Must have achieved at least 75% in pure Mathematics, Physical Sciences and English
- Must be entering a first year of study
- Must be studying towards a STEM qualification relevant to the energy sector
- Must be starting their first undergraduate degree
- Must be accepted to study at a recognised public university in South Africa
