ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER
Public works infrastructure, transportation infrastructure, human settlements, and community-based initiatives, such as the Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP), are all included in the Department of Infrastructure.
The Western Cape government launched the Masakh’iSizwe (MiS) Bursary Program in 2006 to address the skills gap and empower young people by giving them the chance to pursue full-time studies at Western Cape Province’s Higher Education Institutions and earn a tertiary qualification.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure annually awards bursary funding to students in the fields of transportation, engineering, and the built environment, as well as any other fields the Department of Infrastructure deems critical and scarce, in collaboration with higher education institutions (HEI), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the appropriate professional associations.
FIELDS COVERED
Bursaries will be given for degree or diploma programs in the following areas of the transportation, engineering, and built environment sectors:
- Buildings
- Management of Construction
- Civil Engineering
- Heavy current electrical engineering
- Geomatics
- Studies on Mechanical Engineering Properties
- Surveying Quantities
- Regional and Town/City Planning
- Economics and Studies of Transportation
Scholarships will be given for studies at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and Stellenbosch University (SU), all of which are located in the Western Cape.
BURSARY COVERAGE AND SELECTION
Tuition fees, required textbooks, required study materials, support programs, housing and food (or transportation costs), and other expenditures will all be covered by the bursary
Support assistance programs, learning chances for bursary recipients (interns), and job opportunities for graduates are additional perks that the bursary offers students.
Candidates that make the short list will be notified; if you get no response back by February 13, 2026, please consider your application unsuccessful.
BURSARY CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS AND SERVICE PERIOD
During the course of studies, bursary recipients may be required to perform the following during certain weekends: attend workshops; events and meetings, partake in academic experiential training and partake in outreach programmes.
Upon graduation, bursary recipients will be required to work in the public service and/or partnered companies, for the equal duration of bursary funding received.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Before applying, candidates must meet the following minimal standards; if you don't meet them all, your application won't be taken into consideration.
- You have to be a citizen of South Africa.
- You have to be enrolled in or have finished your matriculation.
- You must be pursuing a degree or diploma in one of the aforementioned fields full-time or plan to do so in 2026.
- You must be enrolled in classes at the University of Cape Town (UCT), University of Stellenbosch (SU), or Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in the Western Cape, or you must have applied to and been accepted to one of these institutions.
- Financially disadvantaged students, female students, students with disabilities, and Western Cape students will be given preference.
APPLICATION PROCESS FOR THE MASAKH’ISIZWE BURSARY
Online applications must be submitted via theBursary Application 2026 portal.
Together with your application, send in clear copies of the necessary supporting material:
- Identity document (certified copy)
- Matric results, if you're enrolled in Matric right now (certified copy)
- If completed, a certified copy of your Matric certificate
- Full academic record, if currently at tertiary level (certified copy)
- Evidence of application or registration at one of the tertiary institutions stated above
- Full course outline/ prospectus for the 2026 academic year
- Study cost estimate for the 2026 academic year
- Proof of residential address (recent account or utility bill – not older than 3 months)
- Parents or guardians ID documents/ death certificates if deceased (certified copies)
- Guardians or parents evidence of income (most recent pay slips if employed, an affidavit if not, and evidence of pension or Sassa grant, if applicable)
- A letter of motivation to back up your application.
- Evidence of any outstanding debt, if any
- Evidence of any further financial assistance obtained, if any
- Health care proof of disability, if any
- Certificate of police clearance (if you have a criminal record)
