One of the biggest and most prestigious universities in South Africa, the University of Pretoria honours distinction in both academics and athletics. TuksSport, the university's sports department, is a world leader in a variety of sports. TuksSport makes certain that all volunteers and athletes are valued and included in sustainable sport initiatives that seek to improve and advance the South African community. For every athlete and participant, TuksSport guarantees the establishment of a high-performance support program, offering services like medical, scientific, fitness, sport-testing, tactical and technical expertise, sports psychology, and injury care.
Fields of Studies
For the 2026 academic year, students are being invited to apply for the University of Pretoria Sports Performance Support Bursary.
Any of the following sports are covered by the bursary program:
Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Canoe, Chess, Cricket, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Trampoline, Triathlon, Volleyball, Wrestling
Programme Renewal
The Sports Performance bursary will only be awarded for 1 sport code – students cannot be in receipt of funding for more than 1 sport code. Bursaries are awarded for 1 academic year at a time, and students are required to re-apply for funding each year. Bursaries will be renewed each year based on academic performance, sporting performance, as well as training attendance and commitment to the programme.
As soon as their application is received, all applicants will receive an acknowledgement. Applicants should get in touch with their particular TuksSport club if they do not hear back from them within three weeks of submitting their application.
Requirements for Funding
Before applying, candidates must meet the following minimal standards;
- For the 2026 academic year, you must be enrolled full-time and accepted as a student at the University of Pretoria.
- You have to be very good at one of the sports listed above.
if you don't meet all of the above-mentioned requirements, your application won't be taken into consideration.
Students Selection
The following standards will be used to choose qualifying students:
- Setting financial priorities in accordance with TuksSport club priorities
- The club's lack of athletes for events or playing roles
- Position on the SA Junior and Senior rankings for a certain sport
- Place in the global rankings
- The capacity to earn a spot in international competitions
- Potential results at the Varsity Sport SA and Varsity Cup tournaments in a particular sport, as well as participation in the annual South African Student Championships (USSA)

Along with your application, send in clear copies of the following supporting material:
- A5-sized, full-length action-shot photo of oneself in jpeg format
- Results from grade 11 (if you are a Matric student starting your first year of study in 2026)
- Curriculum Vitae for Sports, which should include the following: History of Athletic Performance, Current Training Plans, as well as your own training plan (if you are enrolled in Matric), from the time you take the Matric exams until you get to university, 3) The areas you are concentrating on throughout your training sessions, as well as your strong and weak points
- Additional details or accomplishments (such as associations, leadership, and culture, etc.)
- Sports Performance Support Application (you will receive an email with the online application you filled out above; you will need to scan or print it out.)
failing to submit any of the above-mentioned documents could result in your application being rejected
